Richard D. Timmerman

Clayton;

Richard D. Timmerman, 95, a 26-year resident of Riverview Apartments, Clayton, and New York went to be with his Lord peacefully on August 1, 2010.

Known to all as Dick, he was born on April 12,1915 in Clayton, New York. He was the son of Dennison H. and Mabel Harter Timmerman. He attended Clayton Central and Sackets Harbor Central Schools. He married Harriet Bell Kendall on August 8,1946 at the First Baptist Church, Clayton. She died in June, 1951.

While working for Central New York Power he was drafted into the U.S. Army on January 27,1941 and was assigned to the 108th Infantry Anti Tank Company. He had been scheduled to be discharged after one year but when WWII broke out in 1941 he was transferred to the 27th Signal Corp 27th Infantry Division. He fought in the Central Pacific, Western Pacific and Ryukyus Campaign. On September 12, 1945 he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Ribbon, 3 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal and Ribbon.

After leaving the service, he also worked as a mail carrier for the Clayton Post Office, operated the Texaco station in Clayton and helped build the C-Way golf course and remained there for several years as a greens keeper. After 10 years as a custodian at Clayton Elementary School he retired in 1983. Mr. Timmerman was a member of the American Legion for 66 years, a former member of the Odd Fellows, Sackets Harbor, and a member of the River Community Church.

He became an athlete at a very young age, participating in football, basketball and baseball throughout high school and beyond. He coached the American Legion basketball team in the Border League. He loved to play golf but his greatest love was the New York Yankees.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Billie Kae and Larry Lawrence, Omar, N.Y. and Terry Dawn and Joseph Bognanno, Canandaigua and Clayton, N.Y. He also leaves behind, one granddaughter, Meredith Jane (Clair) Smith, Fairport, N.Y. and one grandson, Derrick Paul (Jessica) Lawrence, East Aurora, N.Y., one great granddaughter, Kendall Grace Smith, Fairport, NY, 4 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Jane Kendall, Omar, N.Y.

Two sisters, Emma LaPierre and Jenny Taylor, twin brothers Clay and Clifford, and one brother-in-law, Bud Kendall died before him.

A graveside committal service will be held Saturday August 7th at 11.00 am at Clayton Cemetery, with military honors provided by Clayton American Legion Colon Couch Post 821 Color Guard.
