La
Fargeville;
Mrs. Ida Matthews age 98 formally of the Woodard Road in La
Fargeville, died Monday at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown.
Ida
was born November 6th 1911 at home on Point Peninsula
NY, one of ten children born to Walter and Bertha Sanford Brown.
She attended school at the one room schoolhouse on the Old Town
Springs Road near the family’s dairy farm.
Ida
and her husband Stanley A. Matthews eloped on Christmas day
1934; Reverend G.A. Foote in Constableville NY married them. Ida
and Stan first lived in Clayton where he worked at Frink’s
Snowplow and she worked at Clayton Manufacturing Swimsuit
Factory. They purchased a dairy farm on the Miller Road near
LaFargeville, which they operated until 1951, then the family
moved to Lucky Star Ranch near Chaumont, where they were
caretakers until the ranch was sold in 1968. There last home was
on the Woodard Road near Stone Mills were Ida remained in
retirement after her husband’s death in 1984. After a fall at
her home in 2005 at age 94, Ida moved to Whispering Pines Adult
Home in Watertown until entering the Samaritan keep Home in July
of 2009.
Surviving is her daughter Donna and her husband William of the
Woodard Road, grandchildren William, Carrie, Rebecca, Wendy, and
Lance. Great-grandchildren Jace, Gavin, Corey, and Remington.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to
9:00 pm at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. The funeral
will be Friday at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Reverend
Donald Briant, pastor of Depauville Methodist Church
officiating. Burial will follow in Three Mile Bay Cemetery.
