James J. Bogenschutz

Mr. James J. [Joe] Bogenschutz age 62 of 714 Union St. died Sunday morning at his home where he was under the care of his family and the Hospice of Jefferson County.

There will be a graveside committal service on Saturday June 12th at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 1:00 pm with Father Arthur LaBaff pastor of St. Mary’s Church officiating. The Clayton American Legion Colon Couch Post 821 will provide military honors. There will be no funeral or Calling hours.

Joe was born August 12th, 1947 in Watertown the son of Oliver and Eleanor Kimball Bogenschutz. He graduated from Clayton Central School in 1965 and attended JCC. He entered the United States Navy on November 8th, 1966 and was honorably discharged at the rank of BM3 on November 6th, 1970. He served on the USS St. Paul [Ca74] and [Ca73] of the coast of Vietnam, receiving numerous medals.

He married the former Sally Hunt December 10, 1976 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Alexandria Bay, with Father James Meehan pastor officiating.

Joe worked for a time for the NYS Dept. of Restoration. For a time he shorted at Frink’s Snow Plows, he then worked at Fort Drum in 1981 retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Clayton American Legion Color Guard, he bowled on the Tuesday night men’s league for many years, and he golfed on the men’s Wednesday night twilight league until becoming ill.

Surviving is his wife Sally, one son Robert of Syracuse, one daughter Catie and her fiancé John McCready of Clayton, two grandchildren Dylan & Noah, one brother David [Trina] of Clayton, his mother-in-law Betty Hunt of Watertown, one sister-in-law Cathy Saunders of New Jersey, two brother-in-laws Pete Hunt of New Jersey, & Tom Hunt of Florida and Nieces and Nephews.

Donations can be made in his name to the Hospice of Jefferson County, American cancer Society or to a Charity of one’s choice.
